Building trade skills in Mapoon
The six Skilling Queenslanders for Work (SQW) Project trainees have been busy out at Cullen Point in Mapoon, upgrading historical and visitor facilities ahead of the upcoming tourist season.
Under the leadership of Project Supervisor Addi Mamoose, the team have begun fencing the Historical Mission Site at the original Mapoon township. This will keep the roaming horses out and allow Mapoon Aboriginal Shire Council to begin on major developments to improve access to and the information available to visitors. Another crew are constructing Gazebos at the campground right on the point, providing all weather shelter for the campers who flock to the remote campground in the drier months.
We caught up with some of the team during a recent visit to Mapoon to hear what they were working on and how they have been enjoying the project so far:
The trainees will continue to work on these projects, and others to assist host employer, MASC, as well as completing their certificate level courses through the coming months.
As they approach completion in the project, it is promising to see potential roles in Mapoon beginning to emerge for them, and that their newfound skills are positioning them to make the most of these opportunities.
